Dave Ritchie
Our Story

How it Started

In 1958, brothers Dave, Ken, and John Ritchie held an auction to clear surplus furniture from their store in Kelowna, British Columbia, and pay off a bank note. It worked so well that the brothers founded Ritchie Bros. Auction Galleries Ltd., the start of what would grow into the world's largest marketplace for heavy equipment.

Dave ran the company's first equipment auction in 1963. When rain threatened to shut it down, he and his brothers moved the sale under a shop's eaves and drove each piece of equipment past bidders one at a time, an improvised fix that became the "ramp-and-stage" method still used at auctions today. His insistence on unreserved auctions, where the highest bid always wins, and his belief in treating customers like friends shaped the culture that carried Ritchie Bros. from a single yard in Kelowna to a global platform serving buyers and sellers in more than 190 countries.
